Mechanisms of Change

“The process by which change is achieved in successful cases of nonviolent struggle”

Robert Helvey, On Strategic Nonviolent Conflict (2004: 25 & 148)

Dr Gene Sharp identifies four mechanisms for changing power relationships, being conversion, accommodation, coercion and disintegration. Helvey argues that, in the transition from theory and ideas to practice, the opposition must select the preferred mechanism or process for influencing attitudes and behavior of those in power. More so, because this decision will strongly influence the choice of methods for achieving the desired changes.
